Guan Yi started piano at the age of five. In 2018, he has had the privilege to play for renowned artists and pedagogues such as Murray McLachlan and Leslie Howard at the Yehudi Menuhin School.
In August 2019, he was awarded a full scholarship from Forte Academy of Music and have the opportunity to be a full time music student under Mr. Simon Soh. Under the tutelage of Mr Soh, he was awarded the gold award in Johor Bahru Piano Festival. He was awarded the Second Prize in the under 17 and below division in the Finals of the Malaysian Piano Competition 2019 on 14th September 2019.
Guan Yi was also selected as ‘Solo Category Finalist – Young Artist (aged 18-25)’ in the 1st South East Asia (SEA) Piano Competition 2020. Out of 22 participants, he was the third prize winner.
In September 2020, Guan Yi was the winner of the 2020 Hong Kong Pacific Piano Competition (aged 18 and below). He was also awarded the Second Place for the preliminary round of St. Petersburg International Piano Competition 2020 and was selected to be one of the finalists.
In October 2020, Guan Yi was selected for the finals in the Shanghai International Piano Competition 2020 preliminary round. This is postponed to a later date. In the early 2021, he was awarded the Gold award.
Guan Yi took part in the Ars Nova International Piano Online Competition in December 2021 and was awarded the joint First Prize.
In 2022, he was invited to give solo recitals in Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru. In 2023, he received two first prizes in the Open Beethoven’s category and the Senior category at The Happy Music Festival in Singapore.
