🎼Concert Programme – Fantastical Stories

Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943)
🎵 Sonata No. 2 in B-flat minor, Op. 36 (1931)
Allegro agitato-Non allegro-Lento-Allegro molto

A virtuosic piece that is inspired by the bells of the Russian Orthodox Church and that showcases Rachmaninoff’s penchant for long melodic lines, thick textures, and idiosyncratic use of the keyboard all compressed in a connected sonata form.

Alexander Scriabin (1871-1915)
🎵 Sonata No. 5, Op. 53 (1907)

A call to life, that depicts the range of emotions from rage, questioning and listlessness to wonder, exuberance and ecstasy. An incredibly difficult work that showcases Scriabin’s genius.

—– Intermission —–

Alban Berg (1885-1935)
🎵 Sonata No. 1, Op. 1 (1910)

A piece that explores the twelve tone series, but in an emotionally expressive way. The entire piece develops from the opening idea, and revels in the major seventh harmony.

Franz Schubert (1797-1828)
🎵 Fantasie in C major, Wanderer Fantasy, Op. 15, D. 760 (1822)

Inspired by Schubert’s own song about a traveler on a journey to distant lands, this piece is a large-scale tale that reflects on one’s own journey of life. It starts with enthusiasm and exuberance, to loneliness and despair, and back to optimism and hope. The entire journey is encapsulated by the opening motive and the change of characters and emotions are reflected in the motivic changes.
